Description: The goal of this course is to provide an understanding of contemporary human genetics and related issues to students who are not biology majors. Topics to be covered include the transmission of inherited traits, the nature of genes, the importance of genes in cancer and behavior, and the use of genes and DNA in legal cases and in tracing human evolution. More details on course contents can be found in the list of lectures and in lecture 1. There are no prerequisites. A high school course in chemistry is helpful but not essential.
Textbook: M. R. Cummings, Human Heredity, 4th Ed. West/Wadsworth Publishing Co., 1997.
Lecture notes: The notes for each lecture are given on this web site. [Lectures] These notes also include a list of terms with which you should become acquainted. You will find it helpful to print these notes and have them before you in class.
Exams: There will be three hour exams as listed in the schedule of lectures, as well as a final exam. All exams are multiple choice.
Grades: Three hour exams, 20% each; Final exam, 40%.
Absences: There are no "excused" absences. If you miss an hour exam for very good and convincing reason, there will be a general makeup to be announced near the end of the semester. Try, try not to miss an hour exam!
A student who is absent from a class or examination for the observance of a religious holy day may complete the work missed within a reasonable time after the absence, if proper notice has been given. Notice must be given at least fourteen days prior to the classes scheduled on dates the student will be absent. ...
