Description of the Fellowship Program
The Fellowship program is designed to give one year of experience in book publishing to the most qualified applicants. There are two Fellowships being offered for the year beginning September 1, 2008, and ending August 31, 2009.
The 2008-2009 Fellowships will consist of one year of intensive training in one of the following three departments: Acquisitions Editorial, Copyediting, or Rights and Permissions, with exposure to and instruction in the operations of other departments. The Fellowship Committee will decide what department the fellow will be working in only after reviewing applicants' strengths and preferences. The objective of the program is to help prepare the Fellow for a career in book publishing. Heavy emphasis will be given to scholarly publishing, although much of the training will apply equally well to commercial publishing.
Fellowship Eligibility and Requirements
- The UT Press Publishing Fellowships are open only to alumni of the University of Texas at Austin.
- Preference is given to applicants with advanced degrees or those applicants who can demonstrate advanced study or work experience beyond a baccalaureate.
- Applicants must have a strong desire to pursue a career in publishing.
- The Fellow, before accepting appointment, will be asked to sign a statement of understanding and intent—an understanding of the program's purpose and procedures and the intent to complete the Fellowship year and to pursue a career in publishing.
When the Year is Finished
At the end of the training period, the Fellow will be certified as having successfully completed the Fellowship. A few months prior to completion, the Press will notify a number of scholarly publishers of the Fellow's impending availability and will give an assessment of his/her aptitude and accomplishments, as judged by senior members of the staff. The Fellow will also attend the annual meeting of the Association of American University Presses. At the end of the Fellowship year, the Fellow will be required to provide a personal report evaluating the experience. The Fellowship does not provide academic credit.
The Training
The Fellow will focus on the Acquisitions Editorial, Copyediting, or Rights and Permissions. He or she will work with the appropriate department manager and will be given exposure to and additional training in other departments as well.
The Fellow will attend appropriate meetings of the staff and the Faculty Advisory Committee. Throughout the year the Fellow will be exposed to the work and procedures of all departments of the Press.
Evaluation of Applicants
The Director and members of the Press's senior staff will review applications. The most promising candidates will be invited to the Press for interviews in April or May 2008.
Announcement of Fellows
The names of the 2008-2009 Fellows will be announced by May 31, 2008, and the Fellowship will begin on September 1, 2008.
Stipend
Each Fellow will receive $24,000, payable as $2,000 at the end of each month of completed training. Under present laws, this award is taxable, and the University must report payments to the IRS, although no withholding will be made. The University of Texas will not be responsible for fringe benefits, other than regular staff holidays.
The Fellow will have Visiting Scholar status at the University of Texas at Austin. This status allows the Fellow the opportunity to purchase student health insurance and an "A" parking permit, and provides access to campus libraries.
