Before submitting a manuscript proposal to us, please look through our catalog to see whether your subject is in one of our areas of interest. You will notice that we do not publish unsolicited original fiction or any poetry, except for some Latin American and Middle Eastern literature in translation.

You can download and fill out our Author and Manuscript Inquiry Form (in Microsoft Word or PDF format, or you can send us the materials below:
- A cover letter describing the work. One or two pages is fine.
- A table of contents, if you have one, so we can get an idea of what you cover.
If you don't have a table of contents, a more detailed cover letter or a general synopsis is acceptable.
- A sample chapter or some sample pages, so we can get an idea of your writing
style.
- A resume or curriculum vitae, so we have more information about your background.
- A self-addressed stamp envelope for our reply. If you wish your materials to be returned, be sure the envelope is large enough to hold them, and include sufficient postage or a check for the amount of postage. Otherwise, your materials will be recycled.
Do not send irreplaceable materials. Keep a copy of your manuscript; if you must send illustrations, send photocopies, or make duplicates.
You may also send a simple query by e-mail to the appropriate assistant editor. However, due to problems with viruses, please do not send attached files. Please don't email us your manuscript.

Usually you will receive either an initial expression of interest or a rejection within four to six weeks. If the editor requests your manuscript and finds that it meets their expectations, the
next step is the review process, normally lasting three to six months, when outside reviewers evaluate your manuscript. If the reviewers recommend publication and the Faculty Advisory Committee approves the manuscript, then we will publish the book; once we receive the final manuscript, editing and production generally take a year to eighteen months.
